How to Refresh, Rescue & Reclaim Your Outdoor Seating After a Long Winter's Nap
The Outdoor Cushion Comeback!
Welcome Back, Spring…and Mildew?
Let me set the scene: it’s the first truly beautiful spring day and I open the back door, coffee in hand, ready to enjoy our outdoor space…only to notice my sad, splotchy cushions on my outdoor patio set which have spent the winter exposed. Somewhere between the holidays and a WV windstorm, our couch cover disappeared - and the cushions didn’t stand a chance.
If you’ve had a similar backyard experience, you’re in the right place.
Step 1: Sweep it off first
Start with a broom - or a leaf blower - and clear off the dirt, leaves, pollen and fuzz that’s settled over the months.
Step 2: Vacuum like you mean it
Grab your vacuum (bonus points if you use the upholstery attachment) and give the cushions a thorough sweep. Get in those seams and crevices - it helps loosen the grit and preps the fabric for cleaning.
Step 3: Remove & Wash Covers (if you can)
Check for any zip-off covers and read the care tags. If they’re machine washable, toss them in on a gentle and set the temp according to the care instructions. Always zip them up before washing to prevent snagging.
Step 4: Gentle spot cleaning
Mix up a bowl of warm water with a couple drops of dish soap. Apply with a brush or cloth, let it sit for a few minutes, then getnly scrub and blot dry.
Step 5: Mildew? You’ll want vinegar for that
Got mildew patches like I did? Mix a 1:3 ration of white vinegar to water, spray it generously on the stains, and let it sit for an hour. Then scrub with a soft brush, rinse well.
TEST FIRST! TRY THIS ON A HIDDEN CORNER OF THE CUSION TO MAKE SURE IT WON’T FADE THE FABRIC.
Step 6: Sun-Dry
Let your cushions dry completely in the sunshine. Not only does the sun speed up the drying, it’s a natural bacteria and odor buster.
Step 7: Skip the pressure washer
I know…it’s tempting. But pressure washing can damage the fabric and push water deep into the foam, leading to moldy insides. Stick with the gentler methods.
Step 8: Prevent future mayhem
Use a fabric protector spray once everything is dry
Store cushions in a deck box, or cover
Do a quick refresh monthly
A Little Outdoor Magic, Restored
After the scrubbing, vacuuming, and sunbathing (the cushions, not me - though I was tempted), I felt satisfied with the results and the feeling of my outdoor space.
