More Than Just Decoration: Houseplants that Add Life to Your Home
“Just because you’ve only got houseplants doesn’t mean you don’t have the gardening spirit — I look upon myself as an indoor gardener.” — Sara Moss-Wolfe
Hello fellow plant lovers (and soon-to-be ones!), gather around! If you're like me, the mere sight of a lush green leaf can spark joy and that itch to break out my wallet.
This is why I'm here to spread the word about houseplants – tiny bursts of nature that add life, color, and even a calming vibe to your home.
Plus, they're pretty fun to care for (think of them as leafy companions!).
Prior to the pandemic we had a HEARTY quantity of houseplants but once we were stuck on lock-down that itch took over.
By the time the pandemic was over we had over 150 tropical houseplants ranging from the tried and true pothos to some rather pricey “rare” plants (yes, I do have a Thai Constellation, please don’t hold it against me).
We also had multiple humidifiers, special fertilizers, and a spreadsheet to track the watering schedule for the many different plant families we were caring for.
I am a firm believer that every room that has a window should have a plant. Plants bring a special bit of life and energy to a room.
But wait, what about our furry friends? Fear not, pet parents! There are plenty of amazing, pet-safe plants to choose from. Here are a few ideas:
Trailing Beauties:
Safe: Spider plants, Polka dot plants, Peperomia
Not-so-safe: String of pearls, Philodendron, Pothos (although some sources say they're mildly toxic)
Large & Leafy:
Safe: Snake plant, Ponytail palm, Calathea orbifolia
Not-so-safe: Dumb cane/ Dieffenbachia, Monstera deliciosa, Peace lily
Tree-tastic:
Safe: Fiddle leaf fig (careful with those big leaves!), Rubber tree, Jade plant
Not-so-safe: Dieffenbachia, Sago palm
Side Table Sweethearts:
Safe: African violets, Succulents, Air plants
Not-so-safe: ZZ plant, Caladium, Philodendron
Please remember, even pet-safe plants can cause tummy troubles if nibbled on excessively.
So, keep an eye on your curious companions and provide them with plenty of alternative chew toys.
Beyond the Greenery:
2024 is all about shaking things up in the plant world! During the pandemic everything was about collecting the rarest plant you could get your hands on.
Now it is about having the right plant for you in the right space.
Here are some exciting trends to jump on:
Unique Planters: Ditch the boring plastic pots and embrace handmade ceramics, vintage finds, or even macramé hangers. Let your planters reflect your personality and add a touch of whimsy.
Creative Displays: Think outside the window box! Hang plants from the ceiling, mount them on walls, or group them on decorative plant stands. This is especially helpful in smaller spaces where floor real estate is precious.
Remember, the most important thing is to have fun! Choose plants that resonate with you, experiment with different displays, and don't be afraid to get creative. Your indoor jungle awaits!
During February I will be sharing additional thoughts about bringing plants into your home and curating a look that blends with your personal home vibe.
